Dancing Skeleton Puppet

By | April 16, 2005

While I’m not exactly up to date on the state of the art in puppet manipulation, I thought this video of a street vendor making a skeleton puppet dance was pretty amazing. The puppet master does a very nice job at the end of drawing attention to the donation hat. The video is pretty long, but it’s quite entertaining.

Also, it’s a WMV file, so if you’re using Linux, make sure you have the essential codecs installed for a player like MPlayer.

I can bet you that if you walk down Las Ramblas in Barcelona you will find this puppet guy or someone who knows where to find him. While there I saw something very similar.. a guy with a frog puppet playing the piano. I got some video on my digital camera and it still makes me laugh.

Does anyone know the name of the songs? I know Lucille by Little Richard, but what is the other one? It is a very cool tune, and I would like to track it down.

The name of the song is: “MIRA COMO BAILA EL ESQUELETO” This video was not shot in Las Ramblas de Barcelona, This vido was shot in Mexico City, at “La Villa De Guadalupe”, you can purchase this type of TITERES (Mexican Puppets) in Mexico city at “El Mercado de la Merced”. I know, I’m Mexican!!!

Audrey, you may be mistaken about the location of the picture that was taken of the street performer. This picture can be verified by those that are familiar with vehicle license plates. Look at the vehicle across the street in the first picture. Is it Mexico or Spain? Where you are correct is that the puppet is probably from mexico as I have seen this same puppet in Tijuana, Mexico. I hope this bit of info helps those seeking the puppet. What is nice about this one is the three holes on the top of the head. The center is for the mouth movement and the left and right holes on the head help you manipulate side to side expression.

The video of the skeleton street performer was taken in July 2002, at Las Ramblas Street, Barcelona, Spain, during my short trip for a conference.

Before this video got the first prize of a fun-video contest on a Korean TV channel, around early 2003, it had been quite popular in the Korea internet society.

The vendor in this video is actuallyfrom New Orleans. After Hurricane Katrina however, nobody ever saw him again so there’s a chance he’d either be in texas somewhere or that oyu will never see him again. Sorry boys,

    COlson,

He is Spanish and not from New Orleans. You may be confusing him with another. This video and the pictures were taken before Hurricane Katrina.
