Blogger Support

By | January 20, 2003

As is almost always the case, it took longer than I expected, but I now have PhoneBlogger working with both Movable Type and Blogger blogs. Next on the list is Radio.

My work here is done. I am going to sleep.

OK, I hadn’t been that interested in blogging, because, fundamentally, I don’t have that much to say But I do have a web site. And I do like to try new technology. So, the question is how to incorporate blogging with my XML based web site where the pages are created in a strange manner. Hmmmm…. something to ponder. But your blog stuff is very cool.

    Hey, that didn’t stop me.

If you want a decent XML publishing framework, get an inexpensive hosted website (I use DreamHost) where you can run servlets and try out Cocoon – http://xml.apache.org/cocoon/.

Thanks for tha advice – I had been thinking about Cocoon – after I learned Cactus (the “Junit” for EJB) I figured I should keep moving through the “Cs” in the world of open source. Perhaps during my next spell of unemployment I will totally revamp the website to take full advantage of Cocoon and blogging. On the other hand, perhaps I should invest more time in playing video games – I always promise that to myself, yet never do it.

    Two more questions:
    1. How come this reply of yours did not show up in my aggregator that collects changes to your site?
    2. Is there an easy way to add a reference to your blog from my site? (Other than the navigator which I am about to do?)

    Thanks!

    1) I don’t have an RSS feed for comments. I have seen some discussion among the usual blogging subjects (Dave Winer, Sam Ruby, etc.) with regard to implementing this and other comment-related mechanisms for making blogging and commenting a smoother two-way conversation.
    2) The quickest thing to do is to just copy and paste an existing entry in the XML file and then paste in the URL for my blog and change the descriptive name. The documentation should provide some examples of the proper format. Let me know if you need more help.
If I were starting from scratch like you, though, I would use blogrolling.com to maintain my links list. You can then use a bookmarklet to add new links and you can get a notification whenever one of the blogs in your links list changes. Yet another thing on my list of things to investigate for my blog.
